Your Guide to D of E Rucksacks.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme recommends the following rucksacks, all of which are stocked in Cleeve Outdoors.

Vango Contour

Vango Sherpa

Vango Nanga.

The most important thing for a rucksack is that it is the right size to fit your back and is the right size for your expedition.

To ensure that your rucksack is the right size for you, measure the length of your back from the top of your hip bone to the C7 vertebrae. Whichever rucksack you purchase, it’s important that its designed to fit this length. The three Vango models of rucksack each have adjustable systems to ensure that you get a perfect fit every time. For those with shorter backs, we also stock the “S” versions especially designed for you.

Rucksacks are measured by their litre capacity. Often they will have an expansion area, allowing you to carry more, so a rucksack sized at 50 + 10 has a main compartment of 50 litres and can be expanded by a further 10 litres.

For your D of E Bronze expedition we would recommend a 60L bag, for your Gold expedition you might need a 70L.

All the Vango rucksacks are compatible with hydration reservoirs, which means they have an exit point for the drinking tube and inside they have clips or Velcro tabs to hold the water filled bag secure.

Let’s look at the range available

Which one to buy?

All three rucksacks in the range offer great value for money, and all have been tested and recommended by the Duke of Edinburgh association for use on expeditions.

Although we love the zip front pocket on the Nango, we believe that the Sherpa is the best rucksack for use on Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions.

Why not come into the shop and see all three types and make your own mind up.
